ABOUT JAMES CALDERBANK

I’m James Calderbank, a miniatures artist, comics illustrator, and Jewellery maker based in Cornwall. My work primarily explores the horror and fantasy genres, drawing inspiration from folklore and mythology. I graduated with a first-class degree in Illustration from Falmouth University in 2017, and after several years of freelancing, I returned in 2023 to complete a Master’s Degree in Authorial Illustration, finishing in 2024. Currently, I’m looking into pursuing a PhD, as I’ve found great enjoyment in the academic aspects of my studies, particularly exploring British mythology and folklore.

In 2022, I invested in a laser cutter, which opened doors for numerous commissions and allowed me to set up my own laser-cut jewellery business. Since then I’ve expanded my skillset by training in metalworking with a local jewellery business, further enhancing my portfolio.

At the centre of my practice is the desire to tell stories. I have a keen interest in history, striving to ground my fictional narratives with elements of historical accuracy. This connection to the past helps add depth and realism to my storytelling, weaving together mythic themes with a historical context that enhances the worlds I create within my work.
