TO WANDER THE SEA OF STARS

James Calderbank is an illustrator and designer based in Cornwall. Having completed both a BA (2017) and an MA (2024) in Illustration at Falmouth University, James has remained in Cornwall, where his practice continues to be shaped by the landscapes and folklore of the Southwest.

James has exhibited his work widely within the local community, frequently collaborating with the Falmouth Museum of Folklore and Magic, curated by Steve Patterson. His Cornish Pisky sculptures are currently on display in the museum’s basement, and several of his publications are available in the museum shop.

In 2024, James co-founded Taproom Tapestries, a small collective of talented creatives dedicated to making comics that celebrate the weird and the horrific. The group is currently producing its third volume, following the success of two previous publications sold at markets and comic festivals across the UK.

Outside of his art practice, James is an amateur antiquarian who enjoys exploring ancient stone sites throughout the landscape with his partner. A recurring subject of his research is King Arthur, the folk hero and literary figure deeply woven into Britain’s mythic history. His academic writing on the topic has been featured in Excalibur magazine, and he hopes to pursue a PhD exploring Arthurian legend in the near future.
