STONE SITES

I began visiting stone sites in 2023 and then drawing digital sketches of these places in 2025, most I have visited in person to sketch on location, some from photographs. Many of these have been published within Excalibur magazine and Bolderdash zine. The sites represent a historical interest to me but also a spiritual one, there's something truly special about these places, their longevity, the mysteries to their purpose and significance to early mankind, and the folklore that now surrounds many of them.

Boscowen-Un Stone Circle

A firm favourite for many due to the unique shape and layout given the angled centre stone. The stones around it are also interesting as one is fully Quartz, it's easy to see from this site why to many they are seen as ritual sites and incredibly spiritual places.

Stannon Stone Circle

Situated on Bodmin Moor, Stannon is an isolated stone circle site situated a short walk from Arthur's hall. The stones here are theorized to line up with Rough Tor nearby and point to the belief that these ancient sites surround ritual Tor enclosures showing their importance to the ancient world.

The Hurlers Stone Circle

Situated on the edge of Bodmin Moor, these stone circles are some of the most impressive in all of Cornwall, certainly some of the most intact. The site sits just below the Cheesewring, an ancient stone formation dating back to the last ice age. Besides these stone circles lie the Pipers standing stones and Rillaton barrow.

The Sons of Arthur

These stones are named after Arthurs children killed within the narrative of the Mabinogion by a boar. This creature is subsequently hunted across Wales and Cornwall.

Situated next to the Hurlers Stone Circle these stones seem to be a gateway to the site which comprises of 3 stone circles that lead up to the Cheesewring rock formation and Rillaton Barrow on Bodmin Moor.

Somerset

Stanton Drew

Scaling similar to Avesbury, this stone site is a hidden gem in Somerset situated near to Glastonbury and the Somerset levels. Legend tells this was a Wedding party turned to stone by the devil.

Lanyon Quoit

Once capable of sheltering a man on horseback this Cromlech has since collapsed and subsequently been rebuilt in the 18th Century. Due to it's proximity to a nearby road this is one of the most accessible and popular stone sites in Cornwall.

Men-an-Tol

Believed to heal those who travel through it, this stone site holds the legend of a pisky who could heal the sick. among others, it is perhaps the most famous holed stone in the UK.

Trevethy Quoit

Also known as 'The Giant's house' or Arthurs Quoit, Trevethy Quoit is an impressive Quoit, the capstone has a hole in it which many have compared to the holed stones found in stone sites around the UK including the Men an Tol holed stone found in Penwith.
